Some Tricks To Save Bandwidth For Limited Broadband User

Now, I don’t have much internet bandwidth connection (some call it in Indonesian language is “Fakir Bandwidth“, it’s mean you don’t online very often, if you’re online it’s just for limited time and amount). So, early this month, I was subscribe an internet broadband, it’s a 3G broadband and using my O2 Atom Life as HSDPA modem. I’ve limited data plan, it’s only 1 Gb/month. Due to limited data plan, I’m using it wisely. I’m not able to download software very often; I’m planning just for browsing, checking my email and chatting.
So how to manage this broadband connection, I’m using some tricks.
- Using Firefox, I’m install tons of firefox plugins to customize my need. Some of the plugins to limit data downloading are:
- AddBlock and AddBlock Plus to block adds you don’t need
- NoScript to block javascript you don’t need
- User Agent Switcher to Switch your user agent browser.
- If you have another handheld/PDA/phone that support wifi, you can share your internet connection using wifi from your laptop to another wifi device. My wife is using Sony Ericsson P1i PDA, so I use internet sharing connection over wifi from my laptop. She able to connect to internet also by connect using wifi. This function same as 3G router function, so you don’t have to buy a 3G router just for sharing the internet connection.
User Agent Switcher Setting

You can add some setting to User Agent Switcher, here’s some of my setting:
O2 Atom Life setting:
Description: O2 Xda Atom Life
User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 6.12; en)
App Name: O2 Xda Atom Life
iPhone setting:
Description: iPhone
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en)
App Name: AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko)
App Version: Version/3.0
Platform: Mobile/1A542a Safari/419.3
You can check or add another user agent, just refer to this website: http://www.useragentstring.com
Email checking using Gmail, Yahoo! Mobile and Gmail Hosted

Use this links below to check your email, you can save your bandwidth by using user agent switcher. Just select O2 Atom Life setting or iPhone from your user agent setting and than browse to check your emails:
Gmail: http://mail.google.com
Yahoo: http://id.m.yahoo.com
Gmail Hosted: http://mail.google.com/a/your-domain.com
Unfortunately, not all of websites can support this feature if you’re browsing to another websites. It depends on webmaster or owner of the websites policy.
Just try accessing this blog using O2 Atom Life user agent, you’ll get more easy and bandwidth friendly (mobile friendly), so you’ll be able to save your money. I am using mobile friendly plugins for wordpress so mobile users able to access this blog easily and light for mobile devices.

Trims info-nya.
Saya pengguna volume based jd hrs irit bandwidth

smart idea to save bandwidth, I amnow blogwalking and commenting using very narrow band width provided by my gsm career
Disabling java script will also save a lot of band width.
Using opera will help saving bandwidth as well as it has the cached images feature.
hi, cool web site and good articles.
The The first step is to learn how to find out what your Internet speed is.The Internet speed is determined by 2 components: the download rate and the upload rate of data which are usually measured in Kilobits per second.
Then after you know the upload and download rate, you can use tools or tweaks to improve your internet speed, or take the decision to change your ISP.

Hi,
Fine article. Well I suggest you to use opera. Ii’s the fastest web browser in the world as well. It will alow you to stop reloading images on a web page. view > images > cached images. so opera will not load images when you reoad page to update page contents. And you can stop sounds, java script by changing prefereces of opera.
Good luck!
