Easy setup Huawei E220 modem on Intrepid Ibex

One of Intrepid Ibex special features is easy switching to various type of wireless internet access. You can switch from Wifi and Cellular (GPRS, 3G or HSDPA) network easily. On certain devices, you even don’t need command line anymore. I am using Huawei E220 modem, while on Hardy 8.04, I should use some tricks to make it work (still on command line). Now on Intrepid Ibex, you can setup the connection on GUI.

Here’s the step:
1. When you plug Huawei E220/E270 modem, a notification will appear. Then click configure button.

2. Next press forward.
Step 2

3. Select your country and your operator, usually it’s automatically detected and automatically configured.
Step 3

4. Then click apply.
Step 4

Then it’s finish. You can connect now. Just click on network manager and then connect.
Step 5

If you want to edit the setting, just go to:
System -> Preferences -> Network Configuration
Then select “Mobile Broadband” tab to edit or add a new connection.
Network Manager

There you can edit the setting of your username, password, APN etc.

Saya belum pernah pakai IM2 Broadband. Kalau saya tidak salah (tolong dikoreksi), setiap pelanggan IM2 Broadband punya password sendiri2. Langkah pertama coba konfirmasi ke layanan pelanggan IM2. Coba minta username dan password-nya. Kalau sudah dapat username dan password tsb, coba masukan entry tersebut pada konfigurasi Mobile Broadband.

Dulu saya pernah langganan Indosat 3G, kalau Indosat 3G pakai username dan password standar.

Pernah dengar ada laporan masalah setting gak mas dengan E220 di ubuntu 8.10. Soalnya saya barusan baca, lupa di mana tapi dalam bhs inggris bahwa dia ada masalah dengan setting E220 di intrepid.
Kalo ok lancar mulus pengen juga sih beli E220, mikir-mikir juga ‘cos mahal juga sih harganya.

@abien,
Yang saya rasakan tidak ada masalah berarti. Settingnya sangat mudah untuk E220 saya.
Lebih baik dicoba dulu sebelum membeli, datang ke toko penjualnya, bawa kartu simcard anda yang sudah diaktifkan 3G-nya. Kemudian coba dulu pakai, bilang sama penjual modem tsb untuk mencoba sebelum membeli. Kalau semuanya lancar, baru anda beli.
Oh yaa… tapi anda harus ada laptop ya…
Bisa pinjam teman dan bawa liveCD Intrepid.

got this working but can you reccomend a good frontend for it ?

i’d like to be able to send and recieve texts as thats’ how i change my data plan on my pay as you go data service between day to day weekly and monthly tariffs. also to check my balance

otherwise i keep having to pull the SIM and put it in a phone to do it.

also it would be useful to see things like connection type as signal strength

@Glen,
You can use this tool Vodafone Mobile Connect.
It’s has a better GUI and you can send/receive SMS with it.
As I remember, there was a signal strength too. I am not using it for a quite some time.
