1. Adblock Plus

This plugins provide web list that providing adds. Just subscribe to one of the list, so this plugins will block adds based on the list you’ve subscribed.

2. Adblock Filterset.G Updater

This plugins provide additional list that you can subscribe too.

3. Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper

This plugins help you to block adds that the plugins above does not have the list. So you can select which element to hide so you don’t see the adds anymore.

To block adds using element hiding is very easy.

1. Open the option Select Element to Hide from Add Block Plus menu

2. Select and click which element to hide

3. Press Add Filter Rule

4. Voilaa… It’s gone now… See the result.

This method able to block any adds on other websites, including adds on gmail or yahoo mail while you opening your mail. As long as you don’t block adds on the body of email.

Another way to block flash adds is using flash blocker, just install this plugins: Flashblock

I had “Setup Wizard ended prematurely” error every time I re-install virtualbox with version 2.1.0 and the newest 2.1.2. That is why I only able to use 2.0.6 version for the last 3 weeks. Only that version able to install successfully. Start googling around at that time still no luck. Today I am googling again and find a ticket on Virtualbox website telling the same issue.

According to ticket issue on Virtualbox, I need to disable all off network adapter NICs to install Vbox. I have already try it but still had the same problem. Still has that error. Then, I find the root problem. The problem is because when Virtualbox install a newer version, it’s not uninstall old version of network adapter on my machine. That is why this error happen.

Step to solve this problem that works for me:
1. Uninstall first previous version of Virtualbox.
2. Disable all of network adapter NIC (Network Interface Card) on your Windows box.
On control panel, go to System | Hardware | Device manager, browse the network adapter.

If you ever try citrix client (a software to manage UNIX machine remotely). With citrix, we don’t need to press anything to switch from host to remote machine vise versa. Now, VirtualBox has the same feel. Very good…

To activate it, you should install Guest Additions on guest OS.

Just download your torrent remotely and maybe it will finish when you arrive at home.

After using it. Wow, I was shocked. FileZilla now able to download a simultaneous file from one site. This is very good for me, because back in few years ago, I have to use a demo of a proprietary software to try a simultaneous download. But now, It’s all free. Just download FileZilla. Thanks to FOSS.

If you are using Linux/Ubuntu:
$ sudo apt-get install filezilla

Overall. Google Chrome seems a good browser, but still need some improvement. I hope Google will release Linux version of Google Chrome and may be someone will porting it to portable version if it’s possible.

The good thing of this application is this is multi platform application. So you can open, storing and editing the same database file from any OS (Cross Platform Password Management). To open this application on Linux (Ubuntu), you need to install KeepassX.

$ sudo apt-get install keepassx

After the installation, you can open, store, edit, create and manage your password.

Manage you password carefully, don’t let anyone get your password database file.

I am making a summary of mounting my USB on my VirtualBox. It’s not a problem if you are using Windows host, but if you are using Linux host, you should use this step to mount your USB on VirtualBox. OK, here is the step:

1. Add yourself to the vboxusers group created when you installed VirtualBox. Go to System –> Administration –> User and Group. Press unlock and the click Manage Group. Then go to vboxuser properties.

Then, tick on your user account and make a note of your Group ID (GID). See below:

2. Add this line at the end of your /etc/fstab file:

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=[your GID],devmode=664 0 0

3. And also add this line in /etc/init.d/mountkernfs.sh file:

## Mount the usbfs for use in Virtual Box
domount usbfs usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb -onoexec,nosuid,nodev,devgid=[your GID],devmode=664

4. Restart your computer.

5. Don’t forget to add it on your Virtualbox setting.

That’s it… Now you should able to use your USB (Flash disk, printer, etc) on your VirtualBox.

Note:
- Host: Ubuntu 8.10
- VirtualBox: Sun xVM VirtualBox Version 2.0.6
- Don’t put your USB mouse on the list, if you do that, you only able to use you USB mouse from your guest OS (unable to access by host).

Next, I use Avidemux to increase the volume. By using Avidemux, I can increase the gain to maximum -3 dB. It takes about 25 minutes to convert it.

Next, I try another player, It’s SMPlayer. I was surprise that I found SMPlayer able to increase the volume when playing a multimedia file. If you don’t have SMPlayer, just install it with synaptic or using this command:

$ sudo apt-get install smplayer

Right after Jamie’s show on Saturday, then another cooking show continued. It’s time for Nigella Express cooking show. She always looks happy when hosting her show. Most of her recipes about cookies, chocolate, pie, pasta, cheesecake, sometime salmon, lamb or meat. Most of her show always on her kitchen (may be), because sometimes when she finish her cooking, she immediately serve it to her family, husband and her 2 children. Sometimes she invites her friends too to taste her cook.

Seems like both Jamie Oliver and Nigella recipes always delicious and my wife likes the show so much. Now, she never missed Jamie’s and Nigella show. She know many things about cooking from the show. You can find many of their cooking show on Youtube.

I am choosing to use my FAT32 partition on the path directory because windows and linux able to read and write into that partition. PLUS, It’s better to have automatically mounted partition on start-up.

UPDATE (09 Jan 2009):
For those of you where using IMAP, you should tick “Select this folder for offline use” option on Inbox of your IMAP folder. Don’t forget to set both on Linux and Windows your local directory on same folder.

2. Making the same Thunderbird address book
You can install Thunderbird automatic synchronization plugin to synchronize between your two Thunderbird. Use the same plugin for both OS. Download this plugin and install it on both Thunderbird. With this plugin you can synchronize:
* with local files (resp. files on network shares)
* with files via FTP or WebDAV (http or https)
* with files stored in an IMAP folder

After you install the plugin, just set it like below. Go to Tools -> Addressbook Synchronizer. First add your path and then check auto download and upload when starting and exiting. You can select all of your address book to synchronize.

Now, you will have automatically copied address book to or from local directory (or FTP/HTTP if you set a remote address) every time you open your Thunderbird. You need to choose partition that able to read and write by both OS.

Note: Be sure to exit your Thunderbird every time you log off or shutdown to make it uploaded to your directory automatically. Otherwise it will not uploaded and loose your changes.

Too bad it’s not support on Gmail hosted yet.

What application is actually using a lot of resources? You can see on that picture, It’s 3 of them, Xorg, Firefox and Flock. You can’t imagine how slow this machine was when three of them is used together and both browser was opening many pages.

So, to avoid this, here’s what I do:
1. Tune my Firefox & Flock to use minimal plugins, you can use Firefox profile changer plugins to switch between profile. You can create many profile and use it only when you need it.
2. Make 2 types of compiz profile. One is the maximum plugins and using the best plugins to show off to your friends and another one is your light version of compiz that is not require much resources. You can saved each profile and load it anytime when you need it.
3. Use Compiz Fusion icon to switch easily to metacity (vice-versa) when you don’t need compiz for a while.

I think that’s all, I hope it’s usefull.

First, you need to install “Disk Manager”, you can use Synaptic to install it or you can use this command, both methods are the same.

$ sudo apt-get install disk-manager

After you already install it, now go to:
System -> Administration -> Disk Manager

You will now find this window:

At the first time boot (this is apply only at the first boot), a new icon will come at the upper right corner of the task bar, an icon of Disk Manager. You can click on it and than just apply the changes. Now your partition will automatically mounted at boot.

Here’s the step:
1. When you plug Huawei E220/E270 modem, a notification will appear. Then click configure button.

2. Next press forward.

3. Select your country and your operator, usually it’s automatically detected and automatically configured.

4. Then click apply.

Then it’s finish. You can connect now. Just click on network manager and then connect.

If you want to edit the setting, just go to:
System -> Preferences -> Network Configuration
Then select “Mobile Broadband” tab to edit or add a new connection.

There you can edit the setting of your username, password, APN etc.

Now, the new Intrepid Ibex is coming. This is new version of Ubuntu 8.10. It’s time for me to upgrade. But, many of my application are not coming only from Ubuntu, many of my application already mixed with another linux application. So, I’m trying to upgrade my ubuntu at the moment. I try to upgrade rather than do a fresh install. Even my Ubuntu seem already slowing in speed and it seems like it need to re-install again. The problem was actually because I don’t want to re-install again, I was hoping after I upgrade, It will speedup my Ubuntu.

So, I was try to upgrade my Ubuntu last Friday. After I started to upgrade, I found that I need to download 1960 packages. WOW… It will take very long time to download. You can find the progress after 16 hours of download here.

After looking around to this new version. It’s still slow and some of my application was not working, may be it’s not compatible with this new version. Another one was my log-off button and shutdown button was separated one to another. This was not suited my satisfaction. So, It’s time to do a Fresh Install. Then it goes. I was re-install again my Ubuntu to version 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

What is the difference at this time. Intrepid Ibex now able to view my hidden wifi network. As you see, this is my old Hardy Heron wifi network.

My new Intrepid Ibex now able to view hidden wifi network. BRAVO… =d> The blue one are a normal Access Point and the red one are the hidden AP. Both are now able to viewed normally. But there is still a “Connect to Hidden Wireless” menu on that network manager.

Everything is good now, my linux is faster and I can connect to my hidden wifi network easily. Viva Ubuntu…

Note:
- The only problem that I notice right now is just the modem. I’m trying to install conexant driver from linuxant, but it’s still failed. Arrgghhh…
- Another problem was an error when running kdebluetooth4… pppfffuuuhh…. Still need some time find out why…

So that’s why I don’t get the email. So for those of you my visitor who try to contact me using my contact form for last 8 months, I actually not get any of your emails. I am so sorry for this, It’s not because I am not answering any of your email but actually I don’t get any of your email.

A problem ticket already submitted yesterday to the hosting service, but now it still problem. They are still investigating this problem. I hope this will fixed soon.

It’s already solved now. Everything back to normal.

I am using Linux Ubuntu, currently still 8.04.1, but the new 8.10 will coming just in 2 days again. Ok, let start what we got here. I will explain what gadget that work on my linux and what is not working. Maybe you can advice me later how to make my gadget (that is not work right now) to work on linux.

Starting with:
A. HP Compaq Presario V3660TU. This is my laptop, currently still running dual boot because most of my work software is only working on Windows. I’m using Linux Ubuntu mostly at home, but sometime I’m using Linux at office just for browsing and doing any stuff that is not related with work.
B. Acer Aspire 2920Z. This is my wife’s laptop. She is still using Windows. A simple user, she is not comfort with complicated IT stuff.
C. Panasonic SDR-H40. This is my Handycam with 40GB HDD (Hard Disk Drive). Running SMOOTHLY on Linux. My Ubuntu can read the hard drive and play it directly from my Handycam. No need additional drivers. Like the one you saw on screen of my laptop.
D. Canon Powershot S60. This is my 4 years old 5MP camera. Running SMOOTHLY on linux. No need additional drivers. F-Spot photo run automatically when I plug it.
E. O2 Atom Life. This is my PDA. Currently still NOT RUNNING SMOOTHLY on linux. I am trying to run SynCE but still not working. Any idea? My PDA is running Windows Mobile 6.
F. Benq C350. This is my webcam. Currently NOT RUNNING on linux. I am trying with several driver like gspca, uvcvideo, pwc and ov511 but still NOT working. Even I already contact gspca developer and asking for help but they can’t help me. Try to contacting the manufacturer to asking for linux driver but they are not reply me. It’s so bad. Seem like I need to buy another webcam that is supported by linux.

Ok, that’s is all of my stuff on the photo. That photo was taken with my wife’s gadget Sony Ericsson P1i. Oh ya, I forgot to attach my Huawei E220 there. Both that gadget are supported by linux too.

I think it is not peculiar to telecoms, in any field u will find the same except when you go for R&D. Commissioning, planning, optimization and O&M are just to follow the defined method & procedure, mastering them surely not a rocket science.

I think this term is not only specific for telecom and whatever the profession is you are working in you will find people saying the same. In my opinion the important thing is one should try to learn the new things and keep himself updated with the latest technology land marks being achieved in the telecom industry. Moreover whatever you are doing in telecom i mean it doesn’t matter you are in BSS, NSS, RF, IN there should be discussion within your team or with your seniors to have a good concept of the work you are performing at the moment and i believe it becomes more interesting for you when you have a good grip on the task you are supposed to do rather doing it with half hearted and saying oh Its not a rocket science . Hope will have some comments on it.

Just working out in any organization on whatever responsibilities can never be a rocket science, innovations and challenges with an engineering approach does matter and on the top is the ‘learning’ which never stops.

I agree with the general perception but disagree with the way people think of any profession. I know people out there in the field, who only know the processes and tools but lack basic knowledge. Its not a rocket science for sure, but don’t take it for granted. You need to have a sound knowledge of the things you are doing. Try to avoid the short cuts.

Well, nothing in the world is rocket science as long as u know the stuff… but knowing the stuff and then keep expanding and exploring its horizon is what we do as humans.. Creation of a wheel to driving Ferrari is what we have done to prove it.
