Google Chrome Drive Test

Today I have the chance to test Google Chrome for the first time. This is the first time for me to install Google Chrome and try it for test.

My first impression so far:
- Light and fast to open web pages.
- A little bit effort to install. You should connect to internet to install it. Same method like Yahoo! Messenger installation.
- Clear browser view, so wide and large browsing view. There are no unnecessary menu bar and button.
- Marked tab if you download something on the tab.

- I try to post to my blog with it. I am using old version of Wordpress. Seems like Google Chrome unable to handle Java correctly. I can’t open these drop down menu on blog post here.

Overall. Google Chrome seems a good browser, but still need some improvement. I hope Google will release Linux version of Google Chrome and may be someone will porting it to portable version if it’s possible.

Cross Platform Password Management

It’s already more than a year I’m using a password management called KeePass Password Safe Portable. I am a big fan of Portable Apps, all of those application from Portable Apps is already on my thumb drive plus more application like Opera Portable, Skype Portable, XAMPP and many more. This portable apps always useful when you need to use another PC, but you want to use your application, not using the application on host PC, besides you don’t want to leave your data on another PC. This application help me a lot while working on another PC. Unfortunately, Portable Apps only available on windows. All of application coming from Portable Apps is on FOSS based.

One of those application that I want to share is KeePass Password Safe. This application is free. I’m using KeePass Password Safe Portable version. I am already storing more than 120 passwords. This is useful when you usually forgot password or you are rarely used the account and password or you always use different/switch browser. Maybe you have dual-boot OS, then you need to remember the password when we switch to different OS. Off course, you don’t need this application if you can remember all off your password.

The good thing of this application is this is multi platform application. So you can open, storing and editing the same database file from any OS (Cross Platform Password Management). To open this application on Linux (Ubuntu), you need to install KeepassX.

$ sudo apt-get install keepassx

After the installation, you can open, store, edit, create and manage your password.

Mounting USB on VirtualBox (Linux host)

First thing to say, Don’t read this if you already know how.

I am making a summary of mounting my USB on my VirtualBox. It’s not a problem if you are using Windows host, but if you are using Linux host, you should use this step to mount your USB on VirtualBox. OK, here is the step:

1. Add yourself to the vboxusers group created when you installed VirtualBox. Go to System –> Administration –> User and Group. Press unlock and the click Manage Group. Then go to vboxuser properties.

Then, tick on your user account and make a note of your Group ID (GID). See below:

2. Add this line at the end of your /etc/fstab file:

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=[your GID],devmode=664 0 0

3. And also add this line in /etc/init.d/mountkernfs.sh file:

## Mount the usbfs for use in Virtual Box domount usbfs usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb -onoexec,nosuid,nodev,devgid=[your GID],devmode=664

4. Restart your computer.

5. Don’t forget to add it on your Virtualbox setting.

That’s it… Now you should able to use your USB (Flash disk, printer, etc) on your VirtualBox.

Note:
- Host: Ubuntu 8.10
- VirtualBox: Sun xVM VirtualBox Version 2.0.6
- Don’t put your USB mouse on the list, if you do that, you only able to use you USB mouse from your guest OS (unable to access by host).

TIPS: How to increase more volume when playing multimedia files

I have a multimedia file. It’s a movie. I play it in Ubuntu with Totem Movie Player. I find the video of the movie was good but the volume was too low. I have already try to increase speaker volumes and player volumes but they are already on maximum level. I can’t get more volume even my laptop speaker able to play more. This is not a problem if you have an external speaker with amplifier. You can increase the volumes without any problem, because when using external speaker you have the ability to increase it with amplifier. But I don’t have it right now, I just have my laptop internal speaker and or an earphone. It’s the only one I got. So, now I want try to find how to increase the volume of the movie (or any other multimedia files) on my laptop if the sound is too low.

Next, I try to play it with another player, it’s Gnome Player. This time, Gnome Player have the same result with Totem. It can’t increase the volume. Then, I try to use VLC. VLC able to increase the volume by software, but it’s not much. It has limited to some value only. Then when I play again the movie, it’s mute in the middle of the movie. The volume is still quite low and there is silent after playing for few minutes. It’s still not good.

Next, I use Avidemux to increase the volume. By using Avidemux, I can increase the gain to maximum -3 dB. It takes about 25 minutes to convert it.

After the conversion was done. I play it again, but it still I don’t get a good sound. It still low volume.

Next, I try another player, It’s SMPlayer. I was surprise that I found SMPlayer able to increase the volume when playing a multimedia file. If you don’t have SMPlayer, just install it with synaptic or using this command:

$ sudo apt-get install smplayer

If you already install SMPlayer, you can increase the volume. Just click preferences button and then you can configure it. On Preferences window, just go to General | Audio tab. Check “Use software volume control” and set your maximum amplification. I put the value to 900, I don’t know what is the maximum limit but you can put your desired value and see what happen.

After I set the value, I find the volume increasing rather than before. It’s good, because it’s increased when I playing the movie. I don’t need to convert it before I play (like using Avidemux). You can use Avidemux to edit or convert your multimedia files or to play it in another player. But to increase the volume when playing multimedia file, just use SMPlayer.

My wife favorite cooking show on tv

My wife love to watching cooking show on television. Sometimes she was searching her recipes on internet and copied to her laptop for her documentation. She want to cook it after we go back to Indonesia, because in here we can’t find the ingredients to cook it, not so many. Cooking ingredients in here is not as complete as in Indonesia.

One time she watched a television show. It’s about cooking (her favorite). After watching it, she loves the show and planning to watch it again for next week show. She mention it to me when I join her watching the show and tell me about his journey. The show was Jamie Oliver show, called “Jamie’s Great Italian Escape“. It was played around 8 PM. After that, she always watch Jamie’s show on another series of television show. Now, the local television play it every saturday around 10 or 11 AM (I forgot, hehe… ). One time we were visiting a book store and find a books of Jamie Oliver, but it’s already translated to another language. Since then we know him that he is a famous man.

Right after Jamie’s show on Saturday, then another cooking show continued. It’s time for Nigella Express cooking show. She always looks happy when hosting her show. Most of her recipes about cookies, chocolate, pie, pasta, cheesecake, sometime salmon, lamb or meat. Most of her show always on her kitchen (may be), because sometimes when she finish her cooking, she immediately serve it to her family, husband and her 2 children. Sometimes she invites her friends too to taste her cook.

Seems like both Jamie Oliver and Nigella recipes always delicious and my wife likes the show so much. Now, she never missed Jamie’s and Nigella show. She know many things about cooking from the show. You can find many of their cooking show on Youtube.

TIPS: How to use the same Thunderbird mailbox and address book on dual boot OS

Yes, I’m a dual boot user. Ubuntu and Windows XP. The reason why I am still using Windows is because most of my software to work is Windows based, it’s not ported to Linux yet. I am using Thunderbird Portable on Windows and another Thunderbird on Ubuntu. I am using the same version of mail client (Thunderbird). I want to read the same mailbox and address book on both OS. So, I can still read the same mailbox on Ubuntu or on Windows.

1. Making the same Thunderbird mailbox
Right after you create a new account, you can set path to your mailbox. Go to Tools -> Account Settings.

Then go to Server setting and set your Local Directory folder. Do the same for Linux. Just set the same folder. After that, you can access your mailbox on both OS.

I am choosing to use my FAT32 partition on the path directory because windows and linux able to read and write into that partition. PLUS, It’s better to have automatically mounted partition on start-up.

2. Making the same Thunderbird address book
You can install Thunderbird automatic synchronization plugin to synchronize between your two Thunderbird. Use the same plugin for both OS. Download this plugin and install it on both Thunderbird. With this plugin you can synchronize:
* with local files (resp. files on network shares)
* with files via FTP or WebDAV (http or https)
* with files stored in an IMAP folder

After you install the plugin, just set it like below. Go to Tools -> Addressbook Synchronizer. First add your path and then check auto download and upload when starting and exiting. You can select all of your address book to synchronize.

Now, you will have automatically copied address book to or from local directory (or FTP/HTTP if you set a remote address) every time you open your Thunderbird. You need to choose partition that able to read and write by both OS.

Note: Be sure to exit your Thunderbird every time you log off or shutdown to make it uploaded to your directory automatically. Otherwise it will not uploaded and loose your changes.

If compiz makes you slow and how to deal with it

Do you running compositing window manager like this?

Yes, it’s very good compositing window manager, called Compiz-Fusion. If you are using this compositing window manager, you must have sufficient enough hardware resources. For example VGA type and RAM sufficient enough on your system to make it works perfectly.

I’m using HP Compaq Presario V3660TU, a Core 2 duo processor with 4GB of RAM and Intel 965 VGA Card. I’m using the maximum RAM that can be used on this machine. Even the RAM is already on maximum, but it’s still slow when running Compiz with enabling the best plugins on compiz. Then it’s come to the slowest machine ever. Do you see this picture…??

You can see in that picture, CPU temperature already at 64 degree, RAM already used 93 percent, and swap memory already used 96 percent. To make it details, this the output when checking memory usage:

What application is actually using a lot of resources? You can see on that picture, It’s 3 of them, Xorg, Firefox and Flock. You can’t imagine how slow this machine was when three of them is used together and both browser was opening many pages.

So, to avoid this, here’s what I do:
1. Tune my Firefox & Flock to use minimal plugins, you can use Firefox profile changer plugins to switch between profile. You can create many profile and use it only when you need it.
2. Make 2 types of compiz profile. One is the maximum plugins and using the best plugins to show off to your friends and another one is your light version of compiz that is not require much resources. You can saved each profile and load it anytime when you need it.
3. Use Compiz Fusion icon to switch easily to metacity (vice-versa) when you don’t need compiz for a while.

I think that’s all, I hope it’s usefull.

TIPS: Auto mount partition on startup

If you are an Ubuntu/Linux user who has another partition on your hard disk, such as NTFS, FAT32 or any other type of partition. Every time you boot, you need to mount it manually, or you can create a script to make it automatically mounted. This tips is for those of you want to do automatically mount partition on every time you boot (using GUI) but don’t know how to make that script.

First, you need to install “Disk Manager”, you can use Synaptic to install it or you can use this command, both methods are the same.

$ sudo apt-get install disk-manager

After you already install it, now go to:
System -> Administration -> Disk Manager

You will now find this window:

To make it automatically mount on startup, you need to check “Detect new device on startup”. If you need to configure it, click on “Configure New Partition” button (see the picture below) and select which partition you want to configure using “Auto Configure” mount point or you can make a different mount point.

Ok, just that’s it. Now, reboot your machine.

At the first time boot (this is apply only at the first boot), a new icon will come at the upper right corner of the task bar, an icon of Disk Manager. You can click on it and than just apply the changes. Now your partition will automatically mounted at boot.

Easy setup Huawei E220 modem on Intrepid Ibex

One of Intrepid Ibex special features is easy switching to various type of wireless internet access. You can switch from Wifi and Cellular (GPRS, 3G or HSDPA) network easily. On certain devices, you even don’t need command line anymore. I am using Huawei E220 modem, while on Hardy 8.04, I should use some tricks to make it work (still on command line). Now on Intrepid Ibex, you can setup the connection on GUI.

Here’s the step:
1. When you plug Huawei E220/E270 modem, a notification will appear. Then click configure button.

2. Next press forward.

3. Select your country and your operator, usually it’s automatically detected and automatically configured.

4. Then click apply.

Then it’s finish. You can connect now. Just click on network manager and then connect.

If you want to edit the setting, just go to:
System -> Preferences -> Network Configuration
Then select “Mobile Broadband” tab to edit or add a new connection.

There you can edit the setting of your username, password, APN etc.

Upgrading Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex

This is my second time upgrading my Ubuntu. Last time I was upgrade from Gutsy Gibbon (Ubuntu 7.10) to Hardy Heron LTS (Ubuntu 8.04). At that time it was successful. I was upgrading ubuntu (not a fresh install). It took very long time, may be around more or less 27 hours to complete. WOW… It’s was so long. Thank to Indra for his kindness provide me his bandwidth for free. Even I’m already install many application at that time, but I don’t find any errors after upgrading at that time. Everything was good. I just need to re-install modem and sound for that new kernel. After that, everything was normal.

Now, the new Intrepid Ibex is coming. This is new version of Ubuntu 8.10. It’s time for me to upgrade. But, many of my application are not coming only from Ubuntu, many of my application already mixed with another linux application. So, I’m trying to upgrade my ubuntu at the moment. I try to upgrade rather than do a fresh install. Even my Ubuntu seem already slowing in speed and it seems like it need to re-install again. The problem was actually because I don’t want to re-install again, I was hoping after I upgrade, It will speedup my Ubuntu.

So, I was try to upgrade my Ubuntu last Friday. After I started to upgrade, I found that I need to download 1960 packages. WOW… It will take very long time to download. You can find the progress after 16 hours of download here.

After I complete the download (it took about 30 hours to complete in total). I straight away to configure my new Ubuntu 8.10 version. The problem I found was the wifi that I used to connect can’t working properly. Usually I need rutilt to connect to my hidden wifi network, but now I can’t connect at all. I’m trying to solved this may be for an hour, but no luck. Then I try to use network manager that came along with Ubuntu, and then is was working. It’s very good.

After looking around to this new version. It’s still slow and some of my application was not working, may be it’s not compatible with this new version. Another one was my log-off button and shutdown button was separated one to another. This was not suited my satisfaction. So, It’s time to do a Fresh Install. Then it goes. I was re-install again my Ubuntu to version 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

What is the difference at this time. Intrepid Ibex now able to view my hidden wifi network. As you see, this is my old Hardy Heron wifi network.

My new Intrepid Ibex now able to view hidden wifi network. BRAVO… The blue one are a normal Access Point and the red one are the hidden AP. Both are now able to viewed normally. But there is still a “Connect to Hidden Wireless” menu on that network manager.

Everything is good now, my linux is faster and I can connect to my hidden wifi network easily. Viva Ubuntu…

Note:
- The only problem that I notice right now is just the modem. I’m trying to install conexant driver from linuxant, but it’s still failed. Arrgghhh…
- Another problem was an error when running kdebluetooth4… pppfffuuuhh…. Still need some time find out why…

Comment to email and Contact Form problem on this blog

This problem actually already exist since the first time I moved to the new hosting service. Since 8 months/after I moved the hosting of this blog, I don’t receive any email from any person who comment on blog post. Even I don’t receive any comment in moderation by email and also from anyone who use my Contact Form. I should check comment moderation manually by login to the wp-admin and checking it manually. Due to I don’t have time to investigate this problem, I am not checking or asking this problem to the hosting service. Yeaah… I should ask this long time ago.

I am using Gmail Hosted. I don’t have any problem on my email, I can send and receive using that email, but when I input my iqbalir.com domain at admin of blog email and on my Contact Form, I don’t receive any email. Seems like the server don’t know how to route my email. I’m try to use this feature “Email Delivery Route” on my Cpanel, and this is what I got.

So that’s why I don’t get the email. So for those of you my visitor who try to contact me using my contact form for last 8 months, I actually not get any of your emails. I am so sorry for this, It’s not because I am not answering any of your email but actually I don’t get any of your email.

A problem ticket already submitted yesterday to the hosting service, but now it still problem. They are still investigating this problem. I hope this will fixed soon.

Update:
It’s already solved now. Everything back to normal.

Linux and My Gadget

This is my gadget.

I am using Linux Ubuntu, currently still 8.04.1, but the new 8.10 will coming just in 2 days again. Ok, let start what we got here. I will explain what gadget that work on my linux and what is not working. Maybe you can advice me later how to make my gadget (that is not work right now) to work on linux.

Starting with:
A. HP Compaq Presario V3660TU. This is my laptop, currently still running dual boot because most of my work software is only working on Windows. I’m using Linux Ubuntu mostly at home, but sometime I’m using Linux at office just for browsing and doing any stuff that is not related with work.
B. Acer Aspire 2920Z. This is my wife’s laptop. She is still using Windows. A simple user, she is not comfort with complicated IT stuff.
C. Panasonic SDR-H40. This is my Handycam with 40GB HDD (Hard Disk Drive). Running SMOOTHLY on Linux. My Ubuntu can read the hard drive and play it directly from my Handycam. No need additional drivers. Like the one you saw on screen of my laptop.
D. Canon Powershot S60. This is my 4 years old 5MP camera. Running SMOOTHLY on linux. No need additional drivers. F-Spot photo run automatically when I plug it.
E. O2 Atom Life. This is my PDA. Currently still NOT RUNNING SMOOTHLY on linux. I am trying to run SynCE but still not working. Any idea? My PDA is running Windows Mobile 6.
F. Benq C350. This is my webcam. Currently NOT RUNNING on linux. I am trying with several driver like gspca, uvcvideo, pwc and ov511 but still NOT working. Even I already contact gspca developer and asking for help but they can’t help me. Try to contacting the manufacturer to asking for linux driver but they are not reply me. It’s so bad. Seem like I need to buy another webcam that is supported by linux.

Ok, that’s is all of my stuff on the photo. That photo was taken with my wife’s gadget Sony Ericsson P1i. Oh ya, I forgot to attach my Huawei E220 there. Both that gadget are supported by linux too.

Another part from the picture are:
1. My power cord, many cord for laptop and charger. Wow, what a mess.
2. Upss… This is my towel outside of the window. Waiting to dry.
3. My notebook. Can’t live without it. Haha…

Maskapai Linux Airways

Beberapa bulan lalu saya dan istri jalan-jalan ke Palembang mengunjungi mertua. Sepulang dari sana, mertua saya ikut juga ke Jakarta. Saat pulang itulah kami sibuk mencari tiket pesawat untuk 4 orang. Sudah menanyakan ke beberapa travel agent via telpon, tapi masih belum mendapatkan hasil yang memuaskan. Akhirnya kami hunting langsung ke agen-agen perjalanan yang paling dekat dengan tempat tinggal.

Setelah menemui beberapa travel agent, akhirnya dapat tiket dari maskapai yang baru beroprasi disana. Namanya mirip sebuah Operating System terkenal yang bersifat Open Source. Hanya berbeda pada huruf akhirnya saja. Inilah dia… trengg teng teng… Linux… Uppsss salah… Linus Airways…

Saya sudah hampir setahun menggunakan Linux (distro Ubuntu), jadi agak lucu juga denger nama maskapai tersebut. Abis namanya mirip banget sih…

Rocket Science

Here’s some quotation of comment that I take from one of discussion in one of telecom mailing list. The theme is about “Telecom Engineering is not a Rocket Science”. I remember this thread and post this thread to this blog because to respond one a person in another mailing list (Oil and Gas Industry). This person is a fresh graduate, unemployed for 5 months, only seeking for top 3 Oil and Gas Industry, under estimating other side of it. This person is only looking for very good company with very high salary and want to compete with other senior man with their years of experience. Of course his way of thinking would have a lot of comment. Mostly the comment is same as mine, try to reach the top step by step. There is no rocket science in carrier or everything in this life. Just step the way to reach your goals. There is no instance success for sure.

Here’s some of the quotation:

Even life itself is not a rocket science and so does any work we do at any level is not a rocket science. In my view even rocket science is not that rocket science.

I think it is not peculiar to telecoms, in any field u will find the same except when you go for R&D. Commissioning, planning, optimization and O&M are just to follow the defined method & procedure, mastering them surely not a rocket science.

I think this term is not only specific for telecom and whatever the profession is you are working in you will find people saying the same. In my opinion the important thing is one should try to learn the new things and keep himself updated with the latest technology land marks being achieved in the telecom industry. Moreover whatever you are doing in telecom i mean it doesn’t matter you are in BSS, NSS, RF, IN there should be discussion within your team or with your seniors to have a good concept of the work you are performing at the moment and i believe it becomes more interesting for you when you have a good grip on the task you are supposed to do rather doing it with half hearted and saying oh Its not a rocket science . Hope will have some comments on it.

Just working out in any organization on whatever responsibilities can never be a rocket science, innovations and challenges with an engineering approach does matter and on the top is the ‘learning’ which never stops.

I agree with the general perception but disagree with the way people think of any profession. I know people out there in the field, who only know the processes and tools but lack basic knowledge. Its not a rocket science for sure, but don’t take it for granted. You need to have a sound knowledge of the things you are doing. Try to avoid the short cuts.
